Lasix Interactions
There are a number of drugs that interact with this medication, so before your physician starts you on Lasix therapy, give a complete list of all your medicines to the doctor so that proper dose adjustments can be made for you. While taking Lasix, it is likely that you will get relief very soon, but you must continue to take it even if you feel well, unless your physician tells you otherwise.
The following drugs are some of those that interact with Lasix:
Aminoglycoside antibiotics [such as Gentamicin, Tobramycin] with Lasix should be avoided, except in a life-threatening condition, as Furosemide in Lasix can increase the adverse effects of these antibiotics on nerves that control balance and hearing powers.
Drugs containing Ethacrynic acid are not recommended with Lasix, while patients on a high dose of Salicylates [which are similar to Aspirin] can have salicylate toxicity if Lasix is also administered, leading to a temporary hearing loss in patients who have a zinc deficiency.
Administration of Cisapride [which is given to treat Gastroesophageal reflux] with Lasix can also be serious.
Lithium is not recommended with Lasix, because it leads to reduction of clearance of Lithium, thereby increasing lithium toxicity.
Usage of Lasix with other antihypertensive drugs such as Doxazosin, or peripheral adrenergic blocking drugs, is not recommended, as it can lead to an unwanted increase in the effect of those medicines.
Sucralfate, or Indomethacin, may reduce the diuretic and hypertensive effect of Lasix. It is recommended that if Sucralfate also has to be administered, then the intake of that medicine and Lasix should be separated by at least 2 hours.
Furosemide, if given with Aspirin, can temporarily reduce creatinine clearance in patients who have chronic renal insufficiency.
Lasix is also not recommended to be given alongside other NSAIDs as it can lead to changes in the serum creatinine and potassium levels in the patient.
Generic Furosemide interacts with antifungals like Amphotericin B by inducing hypokalemia [lowering of potassium levels in the blood], and the same result occurs if it is taken alongwith corticosteroids such as Prednisone. Cholesterol-reducing medications such as Colestipol or Cholestyramine can restrict the absorption of the diuretic, so Furosemide cannot be administered alongside these drugs.
Patients taking Cisplatin, an anti-cancer medication, are required to drink a large quantity of fluid, resulting in frequent urination, to counter the side effects of the anti-cancer medicine. Such patients cannot take ‘water pills’ like Furosemide.
If patients taking Digoxin are given Furosemide, it has to be strictly monitored, as Furosemide can cause hypokalemia, which can be dangerous for those taking Digoxin.
